We’ve put together some helpful tips on how to maintain your garbage disposal!
You should be running your garbage disposal often even if you don’t have anything to grind up. This is important to ensure that rust doesn’t build up as well as food hardening inside which will cause clogs and odors. You can do this every couple days by running some cold water down it while the garbage disposal is on. Make sure to let it run for a minute. Do not run hot water down the garbage disposal when you do this because it will melt/ soften left over food instead of grinding it up. It will just stick and cause clogs.
Every so often you can grind up citrus peels in your garbage disposal. This will help clear out left over food and minimize odors!
Things you should NOT put down your garbage disposal:
- Grease or oil
- Potato peels
- Large bones or pits
- Pasta and rice
- Non biodegradable food
- Fibrous foods such as celery stalks, onion skin, corn husks etc.
- Harsh chemicals like bleach and drain cleaners
- Coffee Grounds
To keep it clean, run some dish washing liquid and cold water down it and let it run for a minute.
Ice is also a great way to keep your garbage disposal clean. It doesn’t cost a thing and it works great to clean out left over food.
For stubborn odors, pour baking soda into the drain and let it set for a few hours. Then run cold water down it and turn the disposal on for a few minutes.
